134 Sarah Hepola Blackout: Remembering the Things I Drank to Forget
1455554588 pbk
For Sarah Hepola, alcohol was "the gasoline of all adventure." She spent her evenings at cocktail parties and dark bars where she proudly stayed till last call. Drinking felt like freedom, part of her birthright as a strong, enlightened twenty-first-century woman. But there was a price. She often blacked out, waking up with a blank space where four hours should be. Mornings became detective work on her own life. What did I say last night? How did I meet that guy? She apologized for things she couldn't remember doing, as though she were cleaning up after an evil twin. Publicly, she covered her shame with self-deprecating jokes, and her career flourished, but as the blackouts accumulated, she could no longer avoid a sinking truth. The fuel she thought she needed was draining her spirit instead. A memoir of unblinking honesty and poignant, laugh-out-loud humor, BLACKOUT is the story of a woman stumbling into a new kind of adventure--the sober life she never wanted. Shining a light into her blackouts, she discovers the person she buried, as well as the confidence, intimacy, and creativity she once believed came only from a bottle. Her tale will resonate with anyone who has been forced to reinvent or struggled in the face of necessary change. It's about giving up the thing you cherish most--but getting yourself back in return.

158 Webb, Jeff A Observing the Outports
1442628944 pbk good
some light marginalia in pencil The years after Newfoundland’s confederation with Canada were ones of rapid social and economic change, as provincial resettlement and industrialization initiatives attempted to transform the lives of rural Newfoundlanders. At Memorial University in St. John’s, a new generation of faculty saw the province’s transformation as a critical moment. Some hoped to solve the challenges of modernization through their rural research. Others hoped to document the island’s “traditional” culture before it disappeared. Between them they created the field of “Newfoundland studies.” In Observing the Outports, Jeff A. Webb illustrates how interdisciplinary collaborations among scholars of lexicography, history, folklore, anthropology, sociology, and geography laid the foundation of our understanding of Newfoundland society in an era of modernization. His extensive archival research and oral history interviews illuminate how scholars at Memorial University created an intellectual movement that paralleled the province’s cultural revival.

2016 0000104892 1st flash cards new
new. flash cards These 55 Staging Strategy Cards are a companion to the book The Alchemy of Astonishment: Engaging the Power of Theatre by Will Weigler. The 4 x 6.5 inch (10.2 x 16.5 cm) cards are designed as a deck with five suits corresponding to the five chapters in the book. The face of each card has the name of that staging strategy and an iconic image to help remember it. On the reverse is a brief description of the theory and suggestions for how to implement it into a scene or show. They can be used as a teaching tool in classroom, theatre workshop, and script devising settings, as well as by individual playwrights and directors. The deck includes 18 cards—each one featuring three story prompts—that are designed to help an ensemble generate scenarios for practice in applying the vocabulary prior to creating a show.

161 Weigler, Will The Alchemy of Astonishment: Engaging the Power of Theatre
2016 155058586X trade paper new
When stage director Will Weigler analyzed nearly 100 stories from people about their most unforgettable experiences at the theatre, he realized that even though the plays were very different, they all had one thing in common. After discovering just what it was that made them so astonishing, he turned the results of his research into a vocabulary of staging strategies that anyone can access to powerfully express the stories they want to tell through theatre. Combining theory with application, The Alchemy of Astonishment is a useful resource for scholars, educators, students, theatregoers, and theatre artists of every kind. For those who facilitate devised theatre with communities, this book and its supplementary deck of teaching cards offer professional artists and the people with whom they work a shared language that will allow them to meet as equitable partners in the creative co-authorship and staging of dynamic and compelling plays. flash cards sold separately https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRLP16SzTxI&feature=youtu.be

165 Will Weigler From the Heart: How 100 Canadians Created an Unconventional Theatre Performance about Reconciliation
2015 0921783604 softcover new
new This fully illustrated, narrative-based guidebook describes an unconventional theatre production that took place in Victoria, BC in 2013. A culturally diverse, inter-generational group of 100 primarily non-Indigenous men and women collaborated with professional theatre artists to create and perform a play designed as a journey through a 14,000 sq. ft. indoor labyrinth. The project was intended as an arts-based approach to promote public dialogue about settler Canadians' relationship with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities; to stand as allies with Indigenous people; and to take some measure of responsibility for contributing to reconciliation in this country. The book details the original vision for the project (including examination of the question "what does 'decolonization' mean?"), and tells the story of the script creation process and performances, with explanations of the philosophical and ethical foundations behind the choices that were made. It is intended for general readers and students with an interest in reconciliation and arts-based community development, as well as civic leaders who can use this book as a model for how to create their own unique theatre production based on the pilot projec

171 Zwicky, Jan 21 Small Songs
Mission BC Barbarian Press 2000 First paper
handmade paper binding with ribbon decorative add on. out of print a group of short lyrics written after the poems in Jan Zwicky’s award-winning volume, Songs for Relinquishing the Earth (Brick Books, 1999). The finest poetry has always seemed to us to stem from an eye for detail and an ear for the musical phrase. Perhaps that is obvious, but these poems are not. They rejoice rarely in the commonplace. These are, indeed, songs: The day has taken off her silk shirt and turned it inside out ... (from Small Song: Moonlight) The big sea comes in the tall clothes of night, it comes in the afternoon, brilliant in the rags of grief. It raises lace-gloved hands among the rocks and weeds, and beckons at your feet. ... (from Small Song to Oneself)
