The Alchemy of Astonishment: Engaging the Power of Theatre, Weigler, Will
73 Weigler, Will The Alchemy of Astonishment: Engaging the Power of Theatre
2016 155058586X / 9781550585865 trade paper new
When stage director Will Weigler analyzed nearly 100 stories from people about their most unforgettable experiences at the theatre, he realized that even though the plays were very different, they all had one thing in common. After discovering just what it was that made them so astonishing, he turned the results of his research into a vocabulary of staging strategies that anyone can access to powerfully express the stories they want to tell through theatre. Combining theory with application, The Alchemy of Astonishment is a useful resource for scholars, educators, students, theatregoers, and theatre artists of every kind. For those who facilitate devised theatre with communities, this book and its supplementary deck of teaching cards offer professional artists and the people with whom they work a shared language that will allow them to meet as equitable partners in the creative co-authorship and staging of dynamic and compelling plays. flash cards sold separately

From the Heart: How 100 Canadians Created an Unconventional Theatre Performance about Reconciliation, Will Weigler
76 Will Weigler From the Heart: How 100 Canadians Created an Unconventional Theatre Performance about Reconciliation
2015 0921783604 / 9780921783602 softcover new
new This fully illustrated, narrative-based guidebook describes an unconventional theatre production that took place in Victoria, BC in 2013. A culturally diverse, inter-generational group of 100 primarily non-Indigenous men and women collaborated with professional theatre artists to create and perform a play designed as a journey through a 14,000 sq. ft. indoor labyrinth. The project was intended as an arts-based approach to promote public dialogue about settler Canadians' relationship with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities; to stand as allies with Indigenous people; and to take some measure of responsibility for contributing to reconciliation in this country. The book details the original vision for the project (including examination of the question "what does 'decolonization' mean?"), and tells the story of the script creation process and performances, with explanations of the philosophical and ethical foundations behind the choices that were made. It is intended for general readers and students with an interest in reconciliation and arts-based community development, as well as civic leaders who can use this book as a model for how to create their own unique theatre production based on the pilot projec

21 Small Songs, Zwicky, Jan
79 Zwicky, Jan 21 Small Songs
Mission BC Barbarian Press 2000 First paper
handmade paper binding with ribbon decorative add on. out of print a group of short lyrics written after the poems in Jan Zwicky’s award-winning volume, Songs for Relinquishing the Earth (Brick Books, 1999). The finest poetry has always seemed to us to stem from an eye for detail and an ear for the musical phrase. Perhaps that is obvious, but these poems are not. They rejoice rarely in the commonplace. These are, indeed, songs: The day has taken off her silk shirt and turned it inside out ... (from Small Song: Moonlight) The big sea comes in the tall clothes of night, it comes in the afternoon, brilliant in the rags of grief. It raises lace-gloved hands among the rocks and weeds, and beckons at your feet. ... (from Small Song to Oneself)
