2 Allsop, Kenneth In the Country
4th impression hc GOOD GOOD
Hc/Dj At the end of the 1960s, Kenneth Allsop, a famous television presenter and literary man-about-town, left London and settled amid the sunken lanes, ancient forests and chalk streams of west Dorset. He was at his very happiest here. He thought it the loveliest place on earth, and for three years he devoted a weekly newspaper column to his day-to-day life at the mill, brimming with humour and delight for the wildlife which shared his home. In the Country is not rustic or romantic. It is never unrealistic about agricultural modernisation and social change in the countryside. Yet, steeped with a deep sense of the past, Kenneth Allsop’s writing speaks in defence of the natural world and stands firmly against the unchecked exploitation of the land.

Snowshoes & Spotted Dick : Letters from a Wilderness Dweller, Czajkowski, Chris
6 Czajkowski, Chris Snowshoes & Spotted Dick : Letters from a Wilderness Dweller
1550172794 / 9781550172799 paperback inscribed to prev owner
Chris Czajkowski chose to build her life and small ecotourism business on the shore of a high-altitude lake near the southern tip of Tweedsmuir Provincial Park in British Columbia. It is a formidable landscape of lake-dotted alpine plateaus abutting the glacier-swathed backbone of the central Coast Range. Snowshoes and Spotted Dick describes Czajkowski’s experiences as she builds her fourth cabin in the wilderness with hand tools, two chainsaws, an Alaskan Mill and some helpful friends. One of her helpers is Nick Berwian, a quiet but literary young German who corresponds with Czajkowski long after his return home. In these fascinating letters to Berwian, Czajkowski details her often solitary life—how she breaks trails by snowshoe with her two pack dogs, encounters grizzly bears, builds a custom stone oven and learns how to use it to bake bread and serves the enigmatic spotted dick to her visitors. The letters also chronicle Czajkowski’s challenges and triumphs as she tries to finish her cabin. Food and building supplies must be flown in and Czajkowski must hike more than 30 kilometres to the nearest road to lead guiding trips and to attend craft fairs and book promotions to supplement her income. Lyrically written, Snowshoes and Spotted Dick is a spellbinding and uplifting story that provides a close look at a way of life that most of us only dream about, one that cleaves to nature with beauty, resilience and independence.
